In the 2012 edition, the national jury chaired by a national expert of recognized merit in the field of landscape and bringing together representatives of central administration bodies, the autonomous regions, the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities and professional organizations (Association of Portuguese Landscape Architects and Order of Architects), analyzed the eight applications received and their admissibility. Based on the intrinsic value and quality of the applications related to the defined criteria, the jury proposed the attribution of the National Landscape Award 2012 to the designation "Furnas, Landscape Laboratory" and a Special Mention to the application "Vulcão dos Capelinhos", both presented by the Directorate Regional for Environment of the Autonomous Region of Azores. This proposal received the agreement of the Minister of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Planning.
